rip-roaring war adventure entertains with lots of action.
Plot Summary: During
World War II, an American Air Force colonel named Joseph Ryan is
sent to an Italian prison camp where he clashes with the British
inmates led by Major Fincham. When the Italian war effort
collapses, Ryan takes charge and leads a daring plan to hijack a
German freight train. The group must then steam the stolen
locomotive on a high-stakes, dangerous dash through enemy
territory toward the safety of the Swiss border.

Dad's Preview:
This epic World War II prison escape film goes for broke
and it succeeds on many levels. Filmed mostly in Italy,
the sets and scenery are exceptional, both inside the
prison camp and following the hijacked train through the
Italian countryside. The cast is also superb, led by the
stoic Frank Sinatra and fiery Brit Trevor Howard. It is
great to watch these two actors sparring, then, as the
story enfolds, grow to respect each other. I also loved
the bold, familial war musical score by Jerry Goldsmith.
And the ending, though exactly as it should be, will
kill ya. |
