"Yes. Yes, quite a lot of Sioux, Sharp. But the greater the odds, the greater the glory." - George Armstrong Custer, when told by Ned Sharp that his regiment is heading into a strong Sioux force

Why watch this? This lavish production gives one version of the Custer legend.

Plot Summary: The story presents the highly dramatized life of George Custer, following his unorthodox days at West Point and his rapid rise to prominence as a daring Civil War commander. After the war, he takes charge of the 7th Cavalry in the West to protect Native American lands from corrupt, land-hungry businessmen. His unrelenting dedication to his duties and his men ultimately leads him into a legendary final confrontation.

Dad's Preview: Historical films often blend fact and fiction, and this sprawling epic is no exception. It is an entertaining look at Custer's early experiences at West Point and the Civil War. He is accurately depicted as an odd man, constantly seeking glory, often disobeying orders at considerable risk. Yet, fortune favors the foolish, and his brash, larger-than-life personality achieved results. The last third of the film is the build-up to the tragic Battle of Little Big Horn. Here, the film depicts Custer heroically, as if the screenplay had been written by his wife Libby, in order to cement a place of honor in the history books. Love or hate him, he was a man who left his mark. Errol Flynn's performance is second to none as he dashes around mightily wielding his sabre astride his thundering steed. Yep, they don't make 'em like this anymore.
