Why watch this? This is the second best of the original crew's films... and there's whales.

Plot Summary: An alien probe threatens Earth by emitting destructive signals, leading Admiral Kirk and his crew to discover its communication is tied to extinct humpback whales. To save their future, they must travel back in time to 1986 San Francisco to retrieve a pair of these whales.

Dad's Preview: After Wrath of Kahn, expectations were very high. Star Trek III (1984) was good, not great. Thankfully, Leonard Nimoy kept the directorial reins and gave us this wonderful, thoughtful film. Mostly set on Earth way back in 1985, there are many great moments where the futuristic crew has to acclimate to Earth of their past. Many of these interactions are hilarious. The heart of the film is the crew's quest to find two humpback whales and bring them forward in time to save the earth's future from its destructive nature. This film is beloved by Trekkies and regular folk alike. It's perfect.
