Why watch this?
It's a great romantic action adventure film with a great cast.
Plot Summary:
In a remote South American port, a cynical air-freight manager,
Goeff Carter, risks his pilots' lives flying hazardous, foggy
mail routes to secure a crucial contract. An adventurous
American entertainer, Bonnie Lee, arrives on a banana boat,
falls for the tough-talking boss, and decides to stay despite
the constant peril surrounding his reckless existence. The
arrival of a pilot with a tainted reputation and his wife, a
former love of Carter's, forces the tight-knit group to confront
hidden secrets.
Dad's Preview:
If you are wondering where the action-adventure genre got its
start, it was through films like this gem. Packed with stars,
romance and daring stunts, these adventure flicks took viewers
to new locations and experiences. Predictably at its center is a
man in charge, making tough decisions and without time for
romance. Yet, there are not one, but two, beautiful women who
love him. It's a compelling plot that is aided by some very good
(for its time) scenes of old single engine prop planes braving
brutal snow squalls in the Alps. Jean Arthur is superb as usual.
Also, this
film was Rita Hayworth's big breakout role.
