"Never have I had such a strong fish - or one that acted so strangely. Maybe he's too wise to jump. He could ruin me with a jump. Or one quick rush. Maybe he has been hooked many times before and he knows this is how he must make his fight." - The Old Man

Why watch this? It's a very good rendering of a classic man vs. fish tale.

Plot Summary: Based on the classic Ernest Hemmingway novel, an aging, down-on-his-luck Cuban fisherman, Santiago, ventures far out into the Gulf Stream. After eighty-four days without catching a single fish, a massive marlin takes his bait. This triggers an intense and grueling, multi-day battle of endurance between the solitary man and the magnificent creature.

Dad's Preview: There are two truly great things about this screen adaptation of the timeless literary classic. First, the musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin is magnificent. It complements the journey's highs and lows. Second, Spencer Tracy delivers yet another memorable performance. On the surface, he is merely a struggling fisherman who needs a break. When the strike occurs, the result will push him to the limit. Yet onward he fights the mighty marlin. His solitary struggle transcends the story and becomes a trek that impacts us all. On occasion, we face impossible obstacles, and the choice therein: do we give up or stick it out, call it a day or dig in until the end? Choosing the later is how character is built, and the ordinary person gains confidence and wisdom.
