"Yeah, me, too.
Over there, I was a liberator. People lined up in the streets
waiting for us. Throwing flowers and cheering. And here I'm just
another nigger pushing a plow." -
Ronsel Jackson, when asked
if he missed being overseas
Why watch this? Life
in Mississippi illustrates that racism never dies.
Plot Summary:
In the post-WWII Mississippi Delta, a white family and a Black
sharecropping family are forced to share a farm while navigating
brutal social hierarchies and poverty. The plot follows two war
veterans — one from each family — who return home to the
segregated South struggling with trauma and an uneasy friendship
that challenges the racist local environment.
Dad's Preview:
A funny thing happens when people of different races have to
live next to each other. You see, no matter how hard we as a
society try to segregate and villainize the "others", a few slip
through the cracks, and friendships form, hell, even some marry
each other. This film, set in a muddy field, illustrates that
the scars of the Civil War are hard as hell to heal, but goddamn
it, they don't have to define us, either. This very fine movie
is a portal into that time period, thanks to some well-crafted
authenticity. The lead performances all are stellar, and its
plot is thoroughly engrossing.
