"We've been chosen by
God, he'll protect us. We've been given special jobs to do. We
don't fear these demons, we destroy them. We pick them up
one-by-one and we pitch them out of this world. That's God's
purpose for us. The Angel called us God's hands." –

Why watch this? This
religious psychological thriller will mess with your head.
Plot Summary:
A devoted Texas father tells his two young sons that he has
received a divine vision commanding them to destroy demons
disguised as human beings. While one son embraces this violent
mission, the other struggles with fear and doubt, forcing him to
question his father's sanity. The story, told in retrospect to
an FBI agent, unfolds through psychological tension and memories
to reveal the true nature of the family's actions.

Dad's Preview:
Yes, this often underrated film is disturbing because
people are being killed by an axe. However, it is more
disturbing because it walks the (frail) line between
sanity and insanity when applied to religion. It asks,
"When a person receives a vision from God, it is real or
in their head?" "How would you know?" If the Lord gives
you a list of people, who are really demons, and
demands you hack them up - you have to do it!
Bill Paxton was hot off successful films like
Twister
(1996) and
A
Simple Plan (1998), and this marked his directorial
debut. Here he delivers a faith-questioning,
mind-twisting, tense mystery-thriller. The ending is a
doozy, too. |
