"You know what they
say about these waters: if the Jamaican pirates don't get you,
it'll be the cold embrace of the sea. And that's no lover's
kiss." - Romer Treece
Why watch this?
Audiences craved more Peter Benchley... I wanted more Robert
Shaw.
Plot Summary: While
vacationing in Bermuda, a young couple discovers a mysterious
artifact and a stockpile of morphine while scuba diving,
inadvertently linking them to a sunken World War II munitions
ship. Their discovery quickly draws the attention of dangerous
local criminals who want to recover the hidden drugs at any
cost. Forced into a treacherous game of underwater survival, the
couple teams up with an experienced treasure hunter to navigate
the dangers of the deep.

Dad's Preview:
After the success of
Jaws (1975),
The Deep was Peter Benchley's second novel adapted for film. It is a very good thriller
about sunken treasure, Bermudan drug lords, and the perils of
diving near old wrecks. Nolte and Bisset are great, however Robert Shaw shines as Romer
Treece, the one person who can help the young treasure
hunters. What they find near a sunken WWII munitions ship
may cost them their lives. True to Benchley's style, we are
graced by the presence of an over-sized, and very ill-tempered, moray
eel. |
