Why watch this? This
film is intelligent, fun, imperfect, cynical, and leaves you
with a lot to think about.
Plot Summary: In
1930s Berlin, a young, reserved English academic named Brian
Roberts becomes entangled in the vibrant, decadent world of a
local nightclub, the Kit Kat Club, run by a flamboyant Emcee. He
falls in love with the club's star performer, the unpredictable
and free-spirited American singer Sally Bowles, and they
navigate a complex, unconventional relationship amidst the rise
of the Nazi party. Their personal lives and the club's carefree
atmosphere eventually collide with the incoming regime.
Dad's Preview:
Berlin was once a sophisticated hub of art, entertainment and
all bad and good that goes with a thriving metropolis. This
musical film, based loosly on Christopher Isherwood's book,
Goodbye to Berlin (1939), captures that time from the
viewpoint of a seedy Kit Kat Klub nightclub. The musical numbers
are peppered unabashedly with the same sexual energy that
surrounds the film's characters. No one is more promiscuous than
Sally, portrayed by Liza Minnelli (she steals the film and our
hearts). Sally and her fellow entertainers are faced with the
slow disintegration of Berlin, as the ultra-right Nazi party is
sweeps over Germany. This controversial film, featuring both
straight and gay relationships, was a smash with the Academy,
winning eight Oscars including Best Director, Best Actress, Best
Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography. It lost the 1972 Best
Picture award to
The Godfather.
