"You know every time one of
those things goes off, I feel as if I was helping to write
the
first chapter of a new Genesis." –
George Ritchie, referring
to Atom bomb tests
Why watch this? This
monster is simply a rampaging terror, without intelligence, remorse or pity.
Plot Summary: An
atomic test in the Arctic awakens a prehistoric dinosaur, the
Rhedosaurus, from its icy hibernation. The enormous creature
begins a destructive journey down the North American east coast,
attacking ships and a lighthouse. Its path of devastation
eventually leads it to New York City, where a scientist who
witnessed its awakening attempts to stop the beast.
Dad's Preview:
The dinosaur in this film is identified as a Rhedosaurus (a made-up name),
yet this was one of Ray Harryhausen's favorite creations. Here, Harryhausen once
again brings the impossible to the screen - a gigantic reptilian creature.
Using stop-motion animation, a terrified audience witnessed a
raging, iron-skinned beast destroy streets and buildings. God, I
love it!
