Why watch this?
This was the last film for two Hollywood legends: Monroe and
Gable.
Plot Summary:
A recent divorcée named Roslyn Taber travels to Reno, Nevada,
where she becomes involved with three emotionally adrift men: an
aging cowboy, a mechanic, and a broken-down rodeo rider. All
four are "misfits" who are struggling to find purpose in a world
that has seemingly left them behind. The tenuous and complex
relationship between them is tested during a wild mustang hunt
that forces them to confront their personal demons.
Dad's Preview:
Some movies are just the stuff of legend. The Misfits is
stark, raw, real and a case study on loneliness... the kind
experienced by those who's time has passed them by. The film's
writer was famed playwright Arthur Miller, the husband of the
film's female lead, Marilyn Monroe. She, as we'd very soon
learn, had troubles of her own. The male lead was Clark Gable,
an old Hollywood stalwart, literally at the end of his
career. Montgomery Clift, a closeted gay actor, was dealing with
his demons and drug use. Yet here they came together, a one-shot
of icons, directed by the gruff John Huston. Though not a
perfect effort, there are incredible moments: the wrangling of
wild horses, Marilyn's efforts to stop them, Gable's
hard-country quips. Much of the film is long and desolate, like
its characters' lives... it makes the small moments so more
rewarding. Gable died of a heart attack two days after filming
ended. Marilyn committed suicide 18 months later. Five years
later, Clift would pass away, too.
