"Gold is a disease. It
infects men's souls." - MacKenna
Why watch this? Much
of this star-packed Western is stunningly shot in America's
canyon lands.
Plot Summary:
Without getting too deep in the sagebrush, suffice it to say
there are many folks involved, and they all get word of hidden
gold in Apache country. Let the gold fever and double-crossing
begin. Principal characters include the scheming John Colorado,
the beautiful blonde Inga, Ben Baker the gambler, a corrupt
cavalry Sergeant Tibbs and a principled Marshal, Sam MacKenna,
who is determined to bring Colorado to justice. There is
somewhat of a map, and also Native American legend that points
the way to a secret passageway among the cliffs.
Dad's Preview:
I will agree with
critics that the screenplay is confusing, with way too many
different plot-lines to keep track of, however, the film does
get much better when a few unnecessary folks are weeded out, and
the actual search for the gold kicks into high gear. Gregory
Peck, as a Western actor, portrays the American loner-hero like
few others. This may help to explain why this film found such a
large fan base in France, the Soviet Union and India. The gold
reveal in the climax is one to remember.
