"When I say he was a
good man, I don't mean that he hadn't had a bad thought, now and
then. Or, that he hadn't committed ordinary transgressions
against society. But, after all, that's the problem of civilized
man's soul, isn't it? That good and evil are constantly fighting
one another?" -
Dr. Jekyll
Why watch this? This
is another great telling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic
novella.
Plot Summary:
A distinguished London physician becomes dangerously obsessed
with his theory that he can chemically separate the good and
evil parts of human nature. After testing a serum on himself,
the benevolent Dr. Jekyll unleashes his violent, cruel alter
ego, Mr. Hyde. As he indulges his darkest impulses as Hyde,
Jekyll finds himself gradually losing control over the
transformations.
Dad's Preview:
MGM and director Fleming went for broke with this re-telling of
the Jekyll-Hyde story, enlisting three incredible actors in
Tracy, Bergman and Turner. Spencer Tracy already had two Oscars
for Best Actor in his cap, and it is his effort here that
carries the film. He takes a character that was traditionally
played as an evil monster, and makes him instead a sadistic man,
fueled by lust, power and cruelty, which in many ways makes him
more monstrous. The way he mentally manipulates poor Ivy is
criminal. This adaptation is great, and as expected, it is dark
and dreary throughout. If you are a person that desires realism
in film, this one is for you. I mean, evil potion or not, some
men, today on this very planet, live two lives, deceiving all
around them.
